Since we first opened our doors in 2008, MATPEL Ecological Woodworking has committed to making our sector of activity greener. We firmly believe that as we promote our environmental concerns, we can change the structure of the market with regard to both suppliers and clients. By extolling the virtues of eco-friendly woodworking, the number of affordable environmental value-added products on the market and reasonable delivery times will continue to grow. Our efforts and those of our clients are making progress, and the market is slowly changing…
We are among the first eco-friendly woodworkers in Québec to maintain our environmental commitment. Our objective is to remain Montréal’s leading eco-friendly woodworkers for all of your green woodworking projects. In fact, all of our projects end up even greener than our clients had hoped for at the start.
IN CONCRETE TERMS
We choose to:
- use local materials, notably only native species (maple, yellow birch, oak, ash, walnut, cherry, etc.), as well as boards manufactured in Québec or Ontario;
- reclaim urban trees in Montréal to obtain unique slabs through the SLAB project;
- use materials that produce low VOC and formaldehyde emissions (we have ecological alternatives for the following products: plywood, presswood, MDF, melamine, etc.);
- use the greenest glues, varnishes, oils, and stains available on the market (natural oil varnish and stain, low VOC water-based varnish, GreenGuard certified adhesives);
- build products that last. The most eco-friendly product is not the one built with the latest trend in green products, but rather the one that is passed on from one generation to the next and is never thrown away. This is our vision of a product built by an eco-friendly woodworker;
- promote collaboration with architects and designers who endorse the same values;
- find as many uses for our waste as possible (sawdust, scraps, small pieces);
- promote active and green transportation for our employees, and have our workshop in the heart of the city;
- use primarily reusable packaging, otherwise recycled and recyclable packaging;
- use passive solar heating as the main source of heat in our workshop (we got lucky in this regard, our fenestration is ideal!).
